Hyper-V Manager Picks Up Dark Mode in Windows 11 Preview
Reports dated October 11-12 say dark styling has appeared in Windows 11 and Windows Server previews. Microsoft has not announced a timeline for a stable release.
For administrators who spend long sessions creating and maintaining virtual machines, the change fixes a visible mismatch in a familiar tool. It changes selected screens, not how Hyper-V works.
Independent testing also found dark styling in Virtual Switch Manager and Virtual SAN Manager.
Which Hyper-V Manager screens are changing
According to a Windows Latest report, the preview darkens the New Virtual Machine wizard and the virtual machine import and export functions. It also changes the New Virtual Hard Disk wizard and the Edit Virtual Hard Disk dialog. The detailed virtual machine settings interface gets the same treatment. Layouts and configuration options remain unchanged. The workflows do too.
Hyper-V Manager has a separate appearance selector. It can follow the Windows system theme, or users can choose always-light or always-dark mode. A restart of Hyper-V Manager is required for a change to take effect, according to WindowsReport's coverage. The feature is reportedly enabled by default in tested preview builds, without a third-party tool or feature ID. Reports do not specify the exact build or Insider channel.
The main Hyper-V Manager window remains light. So do the Quick Create gallery and Virtual Machine Connection window. Reports describe the same limitation in Windows 11 and Windows Server previews. Microsoft has not said when it will update those remaining surfaces.
Microsoft is applying the styling to Hyper-V Manager's existing Win32 architecture rather than moving the tool to WinUI 3. That approach is more limited than the rebuild used for Print Management. It lets Microsoft update parts of the interface without changing the workflows administrators already know.
Microsoft's official notes for Windows 11 Insider Experimental Preview Build 26340.9616, dated October 10, 2026, mention new dark-mode commands in Windows Search but do not announce a dark theme for Hyper-V Manager. The available notes therefore do not provide separate official confirmation of the Hyper-V change.
The change fits a broader Windows 11 effort to bring older interfaces closer to the system's dark theme. Earlier updates added dark styling to file-operation dialogs, including delete confirmations and transfer progress windows. The Run dialog also got the treatment. In March, Marcus Ash, head of Windows device design and research, said the team was developing technology to extend dark mode to legacy system tools.
For people managing virtual machines in dim environments, darker dialogs make Hyper-V Manager feel more consistent. The update remains limited to selected screens. Microsoft has not announced when the main window or the other remaining surfaces will change.
