Linux users can finally see which apps are using their GPU. The new hw-monitor 0.6 release brings per-process GPU usage and memory stats to the desktop. This is a first for many open-source system monitors.

It works with AMDGPU, Intel i915 and Xe, and Nouveau drivers. Now, users can check exactly how much GPU power and memory each process takes. This helps when tracking down slowdowns or tuning workloads. For many, it changes everything.

hw-monitor is developed as a standalone cross-desktop Linux utility, not tied to any specific distribution or desktop environment.

The update does more than just GPU stats. hw-monitor 0.6 adds a new tab for startup apps. It pulls info from XDG autostart entries. Users can see what launches at boot. This makes it easier to spot slow startups or unwanted background apps.

The sensors UI got a facelift. Theming is smoother. Many bugs are gone. These tweaks make the tool easier to use and nicer to look at. Under the hood, support for modern Linux graphics keeps growing.

Development moves fast. A 0.6.1 patch is already out. It fixes more bugs and makes things even more stable. The full changelog is on GitHub for those who want the details.

According to LinuxLinks, hw-monitor maintains its own GitHub repository and is recognized for providing comprehensive hardware monitoring capabilities across various Linux environments.

hw-monitor is becoming a must-have for Linux power users. Per-process GPU tracking closes the gap with closed-source tools. The open-source crowd is moving fast. Expect more soon.
