OpenAI Android Outage Locks Out ChatGPT Users
On October 9, ChatGPT's Android app cut off users mid-session. Instead of answers, the app flashed a curt notice: "This content is unavailable in this version of the app." OpenAI's only official workaround was blunt-ditch the app and use ChatGPT in a browser. Anyone stuck on an outdated build had no other route.
On the day of the outage, OpenAI also began rolling out the new ChatGPT Dots feature for Android and iOS, which required the latest app version and was not available via the mobile web.
Less than an hour into the Android failure, workspace admins lost access to plugin controls. Suddenly, they couldn't "view and manage plugin availability and settings," and some plugins vanished from dashboards. This admin lockout ran from 21:48:34Z to 23:26:59Z, overlapping the app outage. OpenAI kept quiet on the cause and never shared how many admins were hit. The only real update was a recovery note at 22:52:35Z. Admins waited in the dark.
Earlier that day, a separate snag delayed Costs data in the Compliance API. OpenAI said it "implemented a mitigation," but warned that "some customers may continue to see incomplete Costs data while the backlog catches up." This minor issue was set to linger through October 11. ChatGPT usage and API requests kept running. According to an incident summary by UptimeRobot, the Compliance API disruption slowed Costs data updates, with OpenAI aiming for full resolution by October 11.
OpenAI officially marked both the Android outage and the workspace plugin management incident as fully resolved, stating that all affected services were restored and that stability monitoring would continue.
For anyone tracking AI platform reliability, these outages show how quickly access can vanish and how little recourse users have when official channels go silent. The pattern matches what was reported earlier about ChatGPT's work mode errors: when the system breaks, users are left to improvise and wait for a fix.
OpenAI's response exposed a gap in communication and backup planning. When the only advice is to switch platforms or wait for an update, users and admins are left powerless. The company marked both incidents as resolved, but the lack of transparency and limited options left many frustrated.
