GTA 6 gets R18+ rating in Australia for explicit sex scenes
Sex is now front and center in GTA 6's official rating. The Australian Classification Board gave Grand Theft Auto VI an R18+ label. The reasons are blunt: high-impact violence, drug use, and, for the first time in the series, sex scenes called out by name.
By early October 2026, Rockstar had updated GTA VI's age ratings across all major regions, with the game receiving ESRB Mature 17+ in the US, PEGI 18 in Europe, R18+ in Australia, and R18 in New Zealand.
What the new ratings say about GTA 6
Earlier GTA games, like GTA V, already had sexual acts. Most of these were implied. Characters stayed clothed. The scenes used suggestive animation and sound. Now, the new ratings mention "sex scenes" directly. That points to more detail or realism in GTA 6. The rating comes from materials Rockstar sent for review. It does not guarantee the final retail version will match. Still, the language marks a shift. Regulators are treating the game's adult content as a main feature, not a side note.
A TechTimes report says the Australian R18+ rating comes with a warning about high-impact violence, drug use, and sex scenes. New Zealand's rating also calls out nudity and strong language. There was a brief moment when the Australian PlayStation Store showed an X 18+ label for GTA 6. That was a mistake. It was quickly replaced by the official R18+ rating, as later reporting confirmed.
Australia's classification system for video games does not include an X 18+ category; X 18+ is reserved for films, while games are rated G, PG, M, MA 15+, R 18+, or Refused Classification.
What this means for the industry
Sex scenes are now listed alongside violence and drugs in official warnings. That is new for Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar is pushing adult content further than before. Regulators are not ignoring it. For players, GTA 6 will likely show mature themes more openly than any earlier game in the series. For the industry, this sets a new bar. Major games can now include explicit content and still reach the market, but only with the highest age restrictions. The R18+ rating is not just a warning. It shows how much the rules for blockbuster games have changed.
