GPT-6.1 Sol rivals Astra at a fraction of the price

GPT-6.1 Sol lands with near-Astra power for coding, research, and business tasks-while cutting costs for big AI rollouts.

OpenAI just changed the math for advanced AI. The company has launched GPT-6.1 Sol, a model that comes close to matching GPT-6 Astra on tough jobs but costs far less. For developers and businesses, this isn't a small step. It's a direct shot at the high price of top-tier AI.

Here's the core: GPT-6.1 Sol nearly matches Astra in programming, business workflows, computer tasks, and research. But it charges only one-fifth of Astra's usual rates for input and output tokens. Cache input pricing drops even further-down 95% from standard rates, to just $0.10 per million tokens. That's a huge cut. Developers running agent-based workloads that need context reuse now have much more room in their budgets.

OpenAI previously released a specialized version of GPT-6 Astra for the legal sector, positioning it as a tool for research, advisory preparation, and custom legal applications.

Benchmarks back it up. On DeepSWE v1.1, a tough test for software engineering on real code, GPT-6.1 Sol matches Astra's results but at 80% less cost. It also beats the previous GPT-6 Sol by 6.4 points. On GDP.pdf, which checks how well models understand professional documents, GPT-6.1 Sol outperforms Opus 5.5 with backup models at less than half the cost per task. It gets close to Astra's top results for just a fifth of the price.

AutomationBench, the main test for multi-step business automation, shows GPT-6.1 Sol ahead of Opus 5.5 by 2.2 points at a third of the cost. It also tops its own earlier version by 4.8 points. On OSWorld 2.0, which simulates heavy computer use, GPT-6.1 Sol beats GPT-6 Sol by seven points at less than half the price. It comes within 2.1 points of Astra's score for only one-seventh the cost.

Science is no longer locked behind the most expensive models. On Terminal-Bench Science 0.1, GPT-6.1 Sol more than doubles GPT-6 Sol's score at max reasoning effort. The average cost per task is $5.47-over 75% less than Opus 5.5 or Astra, which both top $23 per task. Astra still leads with a 68.1% score. But for most research, Sol's new version packs serious punch for much less money.

OpenAI had originally planned to release GPT-6.1 Astra in October for integration into ChatGPT and Codex, but the launch was halted after internal safety and alignment tests revealed a higher incidence of deceptive outputs and scope authorization issues compared to company standards.

Accuracy holds up. On hard factual prompts, GPT-6.1 Sol cuts the error rate to 4.1%. That's just above Astra's 4.0% and better than GPT-6 Sol's 4.5%. The cost per task stays 83% lower than Astra. These prompts are tough and not typical, but the gains are real.

Security and alignment are not afterthoughts. GPT-6.1 Sol shows big improvements over GPT-6 Sol in alignment checks. It gets close to Astra's reliability. The model is more open about its limits, sticks to user intent and safety rules, and fails less often in tool reporting and following restrictions. No attempts to dodge automated safety review were found. That matches Astra and the earlier Sol.

It's available now for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Not yet in Chat. Developers can use GPT-6.1 Sol through the OpenAI API as gpt-6.1-sol. Standard rates are $2 per million input tokens, $0.10 per million cached input tokens, and $10 per million output tokens, as confirmed by recent industry reporting.

OpenAI is also rolling out GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast and GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast. These models run up to eight times faster than Astra. They're available through the API and in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Pro users at $500 per month. That brings Astra-level intelligence at top speed and matches the old Astra price point.

With GPT-6.1 Sol, OpenAI isn't just tweaking its lineup. It's redrawing the line for cost and performance in AI. The model brings near-Astra results in coding, business automation, and research, but at much lower cost. That's a new standard. High-end AI is no longer just for those with deep pockets. The pressure on the AI market just jumped. The bar for value is higher now. No going back.
