Google walls off Gemini Pro, hikes price for advanced AI access

Free Gemini users will soon lose Pro access, while AI Plus subscribers get bumped down to a lower model. The price for advanced features is about to jump.

Starting October 9, Google will cut off free Gemini accounts from both Flash and Pro models. Only Flash Lite will stay open to unpaid users. This change is spelled out in a new Google support document. The $4.99 AI Plus plan also gets hit. Gemini Pro will disappear from that tier. Users on AI Plus will be left with just Flash and Flash Lite. The only way back to Pro? Pay $19.99 for AI Pro or $99.99 for AI Ultra. That's a steep jump.

Google says each AI Plus subscriber will get an email with the exact date their Pro access ends. There is no single cutoff for everyone. If you rely on Pro for tough questions, you have a choice. Pay more, or settle for less. The "Deep Think" reasoning mode, once only for Ultra, will now be part of AI Pro. That is new. But it comes at a much higher price.

AI Pro subscribers will see their usage limits set at four times the standard free tier, while AI Plus users get double the free allowance.

  • What changes for Gemini users

Until October 9, free Gemini users can still pick between Flash Lite, Flash, or Pro. That ends soon. After the change, Flash will require an AI Plus subscription. Pro will be locked behind the pricier AI Pro and Ultra plans. Google confirmed that AI Plus users will get an email when their Pro access is about to end. The $4.99 AI Plus plan will only cover Flash Lite and Flash. Pro moves up to the higher tiers. Android Authority reported these details.

No new models are coming. Google is just shuffling access and raising the price for advanced features. Flash Lite becomes the only free option. Flash is for the $4.99 tier. Pro is now premium. The effort control slider stays, letting users pick low, medium, or high effort. But higher effort burns through your monthly allowance faster, especially on cheaper plans. The $19.99 AI Pro plan now includes Deep Think, which used to be Ultra-only.

Google's restructuring of Gemini plans is not tied to the launch of a new model, but rather a redistribution of existing models among subscription tiers, with AI Pro gaining new features like Deep Think.

    Analytics Insight
  • Who loses and who pays more

Free users who switched to Pro for harder questions will lose out first. They get pushed down to Flash Lite unless they pay. AI Plus subscribers, who got Pro for $4.99, now face a fourfold price hike if they want it back. Google has not said how many people this affects. The company also has not shared how much it expects to save by tightening access. Usage limits change too. AI Plus users get double the free tier's monthly usage. AI Pro subscribers get four times the free allowance. PPC Land published a table comparing these limits.

This is not new in the AI world. OpenAI and Anthropic already put their best models behind paywalls or usage caps. But Google is doing something different. It is downgrading current paying customers, not just blocking new features. Free users have one option left. They can only push Flash Lite as far as their usage cap allows. That's it.

    Editorial analysis

Google is closing the door on generous free AI. The company is not just copying rivals. It is downgrading current subscribers and forcing a sharp price jump for advanced features. The message is clear. If you want the best Gemini can do, you will have to pay much more. This move could change what users expect from AI subscriptions. Free and cheap tiers are shrinking. Premium access is the new normal.
