Android users who saw Google Photos freeze after editing a picture can finally breathe. Google pushed out a fix. All it takes is an update from the Play Store.

The bug hit hard. After using the editing tools, the app would lock up. Nothing worked. Users couldn't save or keep working on their images. For a photo app, that's a dealbreaker.

Prior to this freeze bug, Google Photos users also faced a separate issue that blocked editing, sharing, and deleting actions, prompting Google to issue temporary workarounds.

Android Authority

Google gave out temporary workarounds at first. Engineers worked behind the scenes on a real fix. Now, Google has told Android Authority the problem is gone in Google Photos version 7.94.0.988717361. The fix comes as a regular app update. Users need to check they have this version or newer. Otherwise, the freezing can come back.

Google put it simply: "We've rolled out a fix for this issue. It is available now in the latest version of the Google Photos app (version 7.94.0.988717361)." Update now, and the freeze should stop.

But Google hasn't said what caused the freeze. No word on which devices or Android versions got hit the hardest. Users still don't know the root cause. That leaves a gap. Could it happen again? No one outside Google knows. For now, the best move is to check for updates-especially if auto-updates are off. Install the latest build. Editing should work again.

During the earlier bug affecting editing, sharing, and deleting, Google advised users to use the 'Save as copy' option for edits and to access photos.google.com for sharing or deleting already-edited images until a fix could be rolled out.

PetaPixel

Google moved fast to patch the app. Still, the company kept quiet about technical details. That's a missed chance to build trust. Until Google explains what went wrong, users have to watch version numbers and hope the next freeze doesn't hit again.

A detailed report by Android Authority confirmed the fix on September 29, 2026. Anyone still seeing freezes should update right away. Several outlets point out that Google hasn't shared what caused the bug or which Android devices or OS versions were most affected. That leaves some uncertainty about how wide the problem really was.
