Claude outage locks out users as Anthropic races to fix platform
Claude users woke up to trouble. The platform wouldn't let many people sign in or start new chats. Claude Code, Claude Cowork, the API, and the Console all hit the wall. For some, nothing worked.
Anthropic released its new Claude Sonnet 5.5 model just one day before the outage, marking a significant expansion of its product lineup.
Anthropic's update showed two separate problems. The first wave of errors eased by 14:36 UTC. Most ongoing chats came back. But a second, tougher glitch stuck around. Many still couldn't sign in, especially with single sign-on or Sign in with Apple. The impact was clear. Users couldn't start new chats, use voice, access Claude Code or Cowork, buy anything, or upload files. Anthropic's advice was blunt. If you're signed in, stay signed in.
This isn't new for Claude. In September, there were three partial outages-on the 22nd, 15th, and 11th. There was also a major incident on September 3. That one hit ChatGPT and Grok too. Reliability is still shaky for big AI tools.
The outage impacted not only Claude.ai web and mobile apps, but also the Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork, with Anthropic continuing its investigation and providing no ETA for full recovery.
These outages show a weak spot in the AI world. Even top platforms can break down fast. Work stops. Trust takes a hit. Until Anthropic can keep Claude stable, users are stuck with sudden outages. That's risky for anyone who depends on AI every day.
The timing matters. This outage hit as regulators turn up the heat. Just days earlier, a U.S. appellate court kept limits on Anthropic's Pentagon contract eligibility. The pressure is rising.
