Apple targets December for China AI rollout

Apple reportedly plans to bring Apple Intelligence to mainland China in December 2026. The release would rely on Alibaba and Baidu, and still lacks a confirmed launch date or final feature list.

As of October 14, 2026, Apple Intelligence remains unavailable on mainland China devices. Bloomberg, as reported by 9to5Mac, says Apple plans to launch its first features there in December 2026 as part of the iOS 27.3 update. The reported rollout could end a two-year wait for users in China, though Apple has not confirmed the timing.

Chinese iPhone buyers have gone without a headline feature that has been available in the US since 2024. Local rivals spent that time shipping phones with AI features. Apple, meanwhile, sold iPhones in China with Apple Intelligence switched off.

Approvals came in two stages

China's Cyberspace Administration registered Apple's generative AI service on July 15, 2026. Reuters reported that Apple was the only foreign company on the relevant list of approved services. CAC registration is required before generative AI services can be offered to the public in mainland China. Registration alone did not activate the features on devices.

On October 14, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology updated network-access permits to include Apple Intelligence models. The permits cover the upcoming iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro. They also cover several earlier Apple models, and name Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen, known as Qwen, alongside its Tongyi Wanxiang AI models. MacRumors reported that the permits link the AI services and models to specific Apple devices.

That device connection also appears in earlier iPhone Duo coverage. The permits list the phone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, but do not confirm its exact launch date or which features will arrive.

A China-specific version of Apple Intelligence

Apple has partnered with Alibaba on language models and with Baidu on search and visual features. Alibaba's Qwen is slated for integration across iOS and iPadOS in China. The model is also slated for macOS and visionOS. Baidu has said it is working with Apple on features for Chinese iPhones. The China release will therefore rely on local technology partners and differ from Apple Intelligence in other markets, where Apple relies more heavily on its own models and its partnership with OpenAI. Alibaba and Baidu also stand to distribute their AI technology through Apple's iPhone interface.

Genmoji and notification summaries are expected in the first China release. Writing Tools are also expected. So is Clean Up in Photos, which removes objects from images. Bloomberg's report says the rollout will not include the new generative-AI Siri. Apple's image-generation tools may also be unavailable or limited in certain apps. Some text-generation features could face the same restrictions. Apple and Alibaba had submitted jointly developed AI features for approval over the preceding year, according to Computerworld.

The market stakes are significant. Apple's shipments in China rose 24.4% year over year in the second quarter, making it the country's second-largest smartphone seller behind Huawei. A December debut would bring a long-delayed feature to that market, but Apple has not confirmed the exact timing or the feature set.
