It was recently announced that Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the pair behind the $426 million-grossing movie Bad Boys for Life, have been brought on to direct the new Batgirl movie. The Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment title will follow Barbara Gordon, who happens to be the daughter of Police Commissioner James Gordon. The titular character was most recently played on the big screen by Alicia Silverstone in the 1997 critically panned Batman & Robin. Now let’s look back at other female heroes and villains from DC Comics.
Wonder Woman – Hero
Wonder Woman, real name Princess Diana of Themyscira, is by far one of the most popular characters in the DC Universe. Played masterfully in two movies by Gal Gadot, and with a combined worldwide box office gross north of $1 billion, her adventures are set to continue for many years to come. According to the infographic, her powers include speed, agility, the ability to fly and superhuman strength, while her weapons of choice are the Lasso of Truth, a magical sword, a weaponised tiara and indestructible bracelets. She is heavily associated with the Justice League and the Justice Society of America.
Cheetah – Villain
Cheetah was introduced back in 1943, with Wonder Woman No.6 but has since been given multiple updates, including different names and backstories. In the movie Wonder Woman 1984, the long-time adversary of our heroine is played by Kristen Wiig. This time around she goes by the name Barbara Minerva, while her resentment for Wonder Woman leads her to her downfall as she decides its best to be trapped in her Cheetah form which was granted by plant god Urzkartaga. Her character is affiliated with the likes of the Secret Society of Super Villains and Villainy Inc.
Harley Quinn – Villain
We first came across the character of Harley Quinn in the 2016 movie Suicide Squad, played by the tremendous Margot Robbie. The James Gunn directed movie collected over $740 million from the global box-office and the success resulted into the spin-off Birds of Prey, which follows Harley Quinn after breaking up with the Joker. While there is some confusion as to whether this character is a hero or a villain, there have been many times that she was a good guy. While she might lack some of the mind-blowing powers that some of her other counterparts possess, she is very intelligent, is immune to most toxins, is a skilled gymnast and very good at hand-to-hand combat. She is affiliated with the Justice League of Anarchy.
Supergirl – Hero
It is very surprising that we have yet to have a movie based on this character created by Otto Binder. But do not worry, a movie is still in the works at Warner Bros., and many insiders are predicting that it will be part of their movie slate set for release in 2022-2023. While Kara Zor-El, that is her real name, has appeared on the small screen in Smallville and Supergirl, this will be her first appearance on the big screen. Just like Superman, she can fly, she is familiar with Klurkor, a form of marital arts and has a genius-level intellect. She is part of Teen Titans, Legion of Super-Heroes and Red Lantern Corps.
